Rocker Arms
The rocker arm assembly acts as the vital mechanical link in the valve train, translating the circular motion of the camshaft into the linear motion required to open the engine valves. In a typical overhead valve (OHV) or single overhead cam (SOHC) engine, the rocker arm functions like a see-saw: as the camshaft lobe or pushrod lifts one end of the arm, the arm pivots on a shaft or ball stud, causing the other end to press down on the valve stem.
The assembly is engineered for durability and precision, often featuring specialized components like roller tips or needle bearings at the pivot point to reduce friction and minimize wear at high engine speeds. To ensure the engine runs quietly and efficiently, the assembly must maintain a specific amount of “lash” or clearance; in many modern vehicles, this is handled by hydraulic lifters that automatically adjust the rocker arm’s position. Proper lubrication is essential for the assembly, as the constant pivoting and contact with the valve stems generate significant heat and pressure. If the rocker arms become worn or misaligned, it can lead to a distinct “clacking” noise, reduced valve lift, and a noticeable drop in engine power and fuel efficiency.
